- Eared seals get their names from their ear flaps. The ear flaps cover their ear openings. Other seal species have uncovered ear openings. Another characteristic of these eared seals is that their hind flippers can be rotated forward and down, so they can use all of their flippers to walk on land.

When you look at seals they look all the same at A first glance. However, if you look closer there are two different groups. One of the group has retained a distinct, protruding ears hence the name 'Eared Seals' the other group has not. -
Where does the Eared Seal live?
Along the coasts of most continents; a few kinds in freshwater lakes and inland seas.
Eared seals live in the southern seas and the Pacific Ocean. They do not live In the northern Atlantic Ocean. What does a Eared Seal eat?
Seals eat squid, fish, penguins and some eat other seals.-

- The first known eared seal is Pithanotaria starri, a small seal which lived 11 million years ago. Males were the same size as females.
- Seals are thought to have evolved from bear- or otter-like ancestors who lived on land.
- Seals are insulated from cold water by their fur coat and by a thick layer of blubber. In polar environments, seals restrict blood flow to their skin surface to keep from releasing internal body heat to the ice.
- The true seal can stay under water for 20 minutes. It empties its lungs stores the high concentrated oxygen in its blood. Eared seal do not have this capability and only stay under water for about five minutes.
- In a study of northern elephant seals, the seal’s heart rate went from about 112 beats per minute at rest to 20-50 beats per minute when diving.
